    Making Better Choices Shapes Our Future In Positive Ways



    Our world is full of options and we make dozens of choices daily as we navigate life.  Some of these choices are big and some are small.  If you think about it, the life you are living right now is based upon the decisions you have made along the way.  Where you want to live, what you do for a living and even who you get romantically involved with are all based on making choices.  The decisions that we make shape our lives, thus making better choices will shape your future and may lead to increased satisfaction and happiness.


    How Can Making Better Choices Shape My Future?

     

    My future?  How can making better choices shape my future?  Many people want to live a more fulfilling life but they do not know how to make it happen.  When you recognize that the direction your life takes is based on making choices in life then every day you can wake up to a day fill with new choices and new opportunities.  This and every decision you make throughout the day are yours.  Each one creates a new opportunity for growth and happiness.

    The first step is to accept that life is made up of choices, good, bad or indifferent.


    When We Are On Autopilot We Are Making Decisions Without Thinking

    Many times it is just easier to go with the flow where we move mindlessly from one task to the next.  We may find that we are doing the same things each day, because they are easy or comfortable or because that is what we have always done.  If this sounds like your life, you are running on autopilot and making decisions without thinking about how they will affect your life.  It is like you are sleep walking through life heading to a destination that is outside of your control.

    This does not have to be the case.  You can wake up from your slumber and become more conscious of the decisions you are making, begin to making better choices.  That is right!  You have the opportunity, the choice to change your future right now.


    Turn Off Your Auto Pilot And Start Living

    You have one life to live and this is it!  Living is what life is all about.  You can choose to spend your time running on autopilot or you can navigate its waters consciously creating it.  This give you the chance to live your life with intention and with purpose.  You can decide to make a better choices, healthier choices and more loving choices.


    Your Authentic Self And Decision Making

    If you are living your life with intention you are deciding what you want your life to look like.  You do this by making choices in your life that are in alignment with your goals, values and priorities.  It cultivates a life in which you are doing more of what you want and less of what does not enhance your happiness and well-being.

    We all start out life enthusiastic about all of the possibilities it offers.  As we grow and mature, we often learn that life means sacrifice and compromise.  We let go of who we are and what we want to do in favor of doing what is expected of us.  You are not being authentic to yourself if you let go of your dreams and give up your entire life to peruse something you are not interested in. 


    Psychology of Making Decisions For Yourself

    You are the only one who can make yourself happy.  You can support this by living your life the best you can, doing what you want and need to do to ensure your happiness.  Intentional living can help you move from being on autopilot to living a fulfilling life.  You only need to choose YOU first and make decision from the heart.


    How Can I Begin To Make Better Choices?

    You have to be honest with yourself.  Be blunt in this process.  You do this by doing what feels right to you, by making decisions based on emotions that feel good to you.  It is not about keeping up with the Jones’.  It is about living your life with the focus on making yourself happy and bringing in feelings of satisfaction with every choice you make. 


    But I Feel Like I Don’t Have A Choice

    You might be saying to yourself right now that you do not have a choice but if you dig deeper into any situation you will discover that there is always another choice.  The choice might not be pleasant or there might be fear attached to it but there is always an alternative.  If you live in a mindset where you tell yourself that you do not have a choice then you shut yourself down to all other possibilities.


    Strategy For Making Decisions For Yourself

    So how do you go about living a life with intention?  Intentional living is about taking a step back and evaluating the things you are doing and the choices you are making.  It can be as simple as deciding what you will feed your family for dinner to deciding whether to stay in a relationship or not.  The challenge is to have your choices move you in the direction which increases your satisfaction with life.  Then, and this is often the hardest part, sticking to your choices without caving into peer pressure. 


    Living Intentionally Can Set You Free

    When we live intentionally there is always a moment when we consider the consequences of our decisions.  You can support your decision making process by becoming mindful and asking yourself questions such as:    “Why am I doing this?”  “Does this feel right to me?” “Is this for my highest good?”  “Is this something I really want to do?”  “Why is this bothering me so much?”  Making decisions based on the emotions that are revealed when asking these questions is much better than making decisions without thinking.


    Asking Questions Can Help Sort Out Any Confusion

    By asking ‘why’ questions, we can often drill down and peel back the layers that surround a situation. This can help us make a conscious decisions.  ‘I’ or ‘me’ questions allow you to check in with all of your parts. They allow you to evaluate the potential proposition in relationship to you and your values.  The sky is the limit with the number of questions you can ask yourself as you explore the depths of your psyche.

    Internalizing questions also allows you to move forward with whatever choice you made. You can step forward with your eyes wide open and a willingness to accept the consequences of your decisions.  Even hard choices can seem effortless when you make a conscious decision to move forward in one direction or another.


    Journaling As A Tool For Making Better Choices

    If you are finding this challenging then you might try journaling.  Journaling is a form of meditation.  Most importantly, it can help you to bypass your brain and connect you to your subconscious, bringing what was hidden to light.  It can help you tap into your emotions and support you as you make important life decisions. You might find journaling a helpful tool if you have never tried it.  As you contemplate on a question, note what comes up for you and how your answers make you feel inside?  If it feels good, great!  If it does not, then there might be something further you need to consider.


    Choose Your Path And Live Intentionally

    Choose to live your life intentionally!  The more you tune into yourself and make choices and decisions based on your values the easier it will become.  It will also bring to the surface areas of your life that do not quite fit into the life you want to live.  Living intentionally does not mean that you will never make a mistake but if you do make a wrong choice the ramification of it will be easier to bear. 

    So get off the sidelines and turn off your autopilot.  Stop existing and become engaged in your own life.  It will not always be easy but you will be truly living.
