Step-by-Step Grounding Technique for Anxiety Relief and Emotional Regulation

Simple Grounding Technique To Help Calm The Mind & Sooth

Grounding, or being grounded, implies a feeling of stability, certainty, clarity, and strength. We use it when describing someone who is secure, confident yet yielding and has a down-to-earth quality about them. Grounding brings us, as spirit, back into our bodies here on the physical plane. By reconnecting with our bodies, we often experience an increased sense of clarity, balance and the ability to be in the present moment.

When someone says they feel grounded, it is because they are enjoying the connection or reconnection with the earth that has been lost at one time or another.

We feel grounded because our inner life force energy, our “chi“, is moving and flowing. Many things can interfere with the movement of life force energy through our bodies. Fear, especially from trauma is a big one. When we hold onto this energy, it contracts the body making it hard to let it go.

When we ground ourselves, we give ourselves the opportunity to release this unwanted energy and begin to see the truth about it, our truth.

    Grounding: An Alternative Perspective

Let us look at grounding in a different way. In electrical terms, objects with an excess of charge – either positive or negative – can have this charge removed by a process known as grounding. We have all experienced a discharge of energy when we get shocked after walking across a carpet and then touching something made of metal. The shock is caused by a buildup of static electricity, which was instantaneously discharged as soon as we came into contact with the metal object.

When an item is grounded, the excess charge is transferred from the charged object and the “ground”. A lightning rod is a classic example of a ground. When the electrically charged lightning hits a lightning rod, the charge, instead of being transferred to the building it is attached to, follows along a wire that is firmly planted within the earth. The wire creates a conducting pathway for the electrical charge, where it is dissipated deeply within the earth.

We Ground Via A Grounding Cord

Like a lightning rod, we can create a conducting pathway to discharge excess energy from our bodies. This is called a grounding cord. We all have grounding cords through which we anchor ourselves, our physical and subtle bodies into the earth. Some are long, some short, some release mental and emotional energy efficiently, others not as effectively. It is through our grounding cord that we can reconnect with the earth and release trapped emotional energy.

It serves as a vehicle to let go of surplus or stagnant emotional energy from our bodies. A grounding cord is also a part of our subtle energy system, which includes the auric field and the chakras. Creating a grounding cord is an excellent way to help calm the body, mind, and spirit.

Free Simple Grounding Technique Guided Meditation

    1. To begin this meditation, close your eyes and take a deep breath.
    2. Rest your hands gently on your lap and your feet flat on the floor.
    3. Take a moment to notice what’s happening around you.
    4. Where are you in the room?
    5. That’s right.
    6. On your inner viewer, look around and see what’s with you in the room?
    7. Orient yourself to your surroundings.
    8. Next, say hello to your body.
    9. Listen to your heart beat.
    10. Then, breathe in again, and allow you, as spirit, to effortlessly rest back into your body.
    11. Before we create a grounding cord, let’s start by calling back your energy.
    12. You can do this by visualizing a soap bubble or a big water balloon over your head.
    13. Have it appear as a ball of golden white light.
    14. As you call back your energy, this ball of golden white light is going to get bigger and bigger as it fills up with more and more of your energy.
    15. Where did you leave your energy today?
    16. Is it still in your car?
    17. Or did you leave some of it at home? Is it with a child or spouse who has something for you to do?
    18. Or in a project at work? We often leave some of our life force energy in our jobs.
    19. Maybe you went to the grocery store or the bank?
    20. Think about where you left your energy and summon it back to you.
    21. Give yourself permission to not know where you left some of your energy and summon that back as well.
    22. Do this by drawing it in like a magnet. Allow your energy to drift into that water balloon, flowing into it and filling it up.
    23. Go ahead and watch.
    24. Notice how big that ball of energy gets.
    25. Look at how much energy you’ve left out there.
    26. Think about how good it is going to feel when you get to have it back.
    27. When the ball of golden white light is nice and big and you are ready to fill yourself up, go ahead and poke a hole in it.
    28. Let your energy cascade over you.
    29. You might find it flowing onto you like water, like that water balloon just popped or a magnet just released.
    30. Allow all that energy to fill up every cell of your body.
    31. Let it flow through the seventh chakra and swirl around inside your head.
    32. You might feel it tingling or tickling a bit or you might feel a warm sensation.
    33. Let that energy flow through you.
    34. Have it come into your neck and shoulders.
    35. Bring it into your torso and arms, filling them up.
    36. Let it flow down into your ankles and feet.
    37. Make sure that some of this energy flows down and around your back.
    38. Now, take a deep breath.
    39. You’re doing a good job. You’re giving your own energy back to yourself. That’s where it belongs.
    40. Take one more nice deep breath.
    41. And now that you’ve brought in your own energy, it’s time to create a grounding cord.
    42. A grounding cord is a line of energy that runs from the first chakra down to the center of the planet.
    43. The first Chakra is located at the base of the spine.
    44. Put your energy and attention there.
    45. You may find this chakra tingling, vibrating or feeling warmer as you concentrate on this area of your body.
    46. Next, on your inner viewer, visualize the center of the planet.
    47. The center of the planet can look any way you want. It can appear as a hollow ball or a solid sphere. It can be made of molten rock or like the insides of a baseball. It can even appear as a ball of white light.
    48. Whatever you want the center of the planet to look like, have that appear that way now.
    49. Next, create a line of energy that goes from the first chakra down to the center of the planet.
    50. Let this line of energy appear as a Redwood tree.
    51. Allow this Redwood tree to form easily and effortlessly.
    52. When it reaches the center of the planet, allow your Redwood tree to form roots, hooking you firmly into the planet.
    53. Imagine your body releasing energy down your grounding cord, your Redwood tree, all the way down to the center of the planet.
    54. Notice how this feels to your body.
    55. Do you notice any shifts in your energy?
    56. Do you feel more relaxed with your grounding cord in place?
    57. Do you feel more centered, clearer, or more at ease?
    58. Continue to release energy down your grounding cord for a moment longer.
    59. Now let’s call back some more of your energy.
    60. Envision a new sphere of golden white light above your head and once again draw your energy back.
    61. Watch as the sphere gets bigger and bigger over your head.
    62. When you feel that your sphere of golden white light is full, reach up over your head and take hold of the sphere, bringing it down and around your body.
    63. Notice how good it feels to bring this warm, revitalizing and healing energy down and around your body.
    64. You may feel a tingling on your skin or the warmth of sitting in the amber glow of your own energy.
    65. Take a deep breath and breathe in some of this golden white light.
    66. Allow it to radiate through your body, filling you with this wonderful healing energy, your energy.
    67. Allow some of this energy to go down your grounding cord. This will give your grounding cord a healing.
    68. Notice how good it feels to be filled with your own energy again.
    69. When your body feels full, vital and refreshed, stretch out your body, opening your eyes when you feel comfortable.

The Psychological Foundations of Grounding Techniques

While grounding has deep roots in ancient energetic traditions, it is also a cornerstone of modern clinical psychology. In the fields of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Informed Care, grounding is a recognized evidence-based intervention used to manage symptoms of dissociation, emotional dysregulation, and panic attacks.

When the nervous system enters a “fight, flight, or freeze” response, the mind can become detached from the present environment. Clinical grounding techniques work by re-engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the brain’s focus from internal distress back to external sensory input. By consciously anchoring the self to the physical world—whether through visualization or tactile awareness—individuals can effectively reduce hyperarousal and regain cognitive clarity. Integrating these “bottom-up” physiological shifts is essential for long-term emotional resilience and stabilization during periods of acute stress.
