Recognizing the Shift: From Survival Mode to Emotional Resiliency
Written and Reviewed by Dr. Rita Louise, PhD
We all go through life’s ups and downs. While this is not a clinical article, I wanted to share some insights from my work as a Naturopath and Trauma-Informed Spiritual Guide. If you have experienced trauma and especially if you have a history of struggling to control your emotions (emotional dysregulation), I want to share the subtle, beautiful signs that indicate you are healing. It’s like finding little breadcrumbs on your path to feeling whole again.
The Overzealous Alarm System
Let’s start with a truth we all know: life throws curveballs. Maybe it’s the kids driving you up the wall, a flat tire, or a leaky pipe. When these moments hit, your body might go into overdrive. Your heart races, your stomach sinks, or your breathing becomes shallow.
That’s your stress response kicking in, like an overzealous alarm system blaring, “Danger! Danger!”
For most folks, taking a few deep breaths can hit the reset button. But if you’ve experienced trauma—from a tough childhood, abuse, neglect, or a string of life’s hardest hits—that reset button can feel stuck. Recovery might take hours, days, or even weeks. I’ve seen this in so many of my clients.
The Echoes of Trauma
I remember one client, let’s call her Sarah, who’d get triggered by the tiniest comment that felt disrespectful. Over the phone, I could hear her voice tighten, her defenses up like she was ready to spar. Another client, Jane, would spiral if she coughed three times, convinced it was a one-way ticket to a dire diagnosis. And then there’s Mike, who’d panic that one leaky pipe meant his whole house was about to collapse.
These reactions aren’t just “overreacting”—they’re the echoes of trauma, making small moments feel like massive threats to your Medical Sovereignty.
But here’s the exciting part: when you start working on yourself, things change. Even if you don’t notice it at first, the “survival loop” begins to loosen. Here are the signs that you are moving forward.
Sign #1: You’re Getting Better at Emotional Regulation
One of the first signs you’re healing is that you’re not as reactive as you used to be. Picture this: Jane coughs three times, and instead of calling me in a panic, she pauses, checks in with herself, and says, “Nah, I’m fine,” then moves on.
That’s emotional regulation in action. It is when you can feel the trigger but not have it hijack your whole day. I’ve seen clients go from a week-long meltdown over a minor event to brushing it off in a few hours. That is massive progress!
Sign #2: Your Body Feels Lighter
Trauma doesn’t just mess with your mind; it takes a toll on your body. Constant triggers leave your adrenal glands exhausted. As you heal, you might notice less muscle tension, deeper breaths, or more energy.
When you aren’t stuck in a constant stress response, your body finally gets a chance to recharge. You find yourself feeling more relaxed, less fatigued, and just… lighter.
Sign #3: Fewer Flashbacks and Intrusive Thoughts
If you’ve dealt with trauma, you know about intrusive thoughts—those pesky worries that sneak in, or the rumination over a conversation from three weeks ago.
When you’re healing, these thoughts don’t “stick” as long. Maybe you worry for an hour instead of a day. You catch yourself ruminating and redirect your mind faster. Your brain is learning to change the channel instead of replaying the same old rerun.
Sign #4: You Have a “Toolbox for the Soul”
As you work on yourself, you get better at calming the storm. When triggered, you reflexively reach for your tools: breathing exercises, a walk in nature, the gym, or even the Ho’oponopono chant.
The more you practice these coping strategies—even when you’re not triggered—the more effective they become. You are building a toolbox for your soul, so when life throws a curveball, you have the right tool to handle it.
Sign #5: Healthier Relationships (Including With Yourself!)
Healing transforms your relationships. As you master emotional regulation, you find it easier to set boundaries, communicate your needs, and love yourself.
I’ve seen clients go from feeling like they’re just “along for the ride” in relationships to being active, confident participants. When you are kinder to yourself, you attract healthier connections with others. It’s a ripple effect of goodness.
Sign #6: Moments of Joy, Contentment, and High Vibration
When you’re stuck in a trauma response, life feels like a constant low hum of stress. But as you heal, you notice moments of calm or even joy.
I had a flat tire recently. Instead of freaking out, I laughed because I had pulled up right outside my gym. What better place to land than a building filled with buff guys who could change it for me? Who needs AAA in a situation like that? That’s the kind of lightness healing brings. It shows your vibration is rising.
Healing Isn’t a Straight Line
Healing isn’t a straight line. Some days, you’ll feel like you’re back in that dark hole, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’ve lost your progress; it means you’re human. Maybe one day you recover quickly, and the next takes a bit longer.
The key is to keep paying attention to how far you’ve come. Track your recovery time, notice how your body feels, and celebrate those small wins. They add up to a life of Medical Sovereignty.
